- Opening of Fleet Operation e-Center in consideration of connection with Performance Demonstration Center

POS SM and Pan Ocean held an agreement ceremony to designate demonstration of MASS at the POS SM headquarters in Busan on the afternoon of the 19 of last month. After the agreement ceremony, the opening ceremony of the Fleet Operation e-Center was held to link with the Performance Demonstration Center.

The event was attended by POS SM CEO Kim Myeong-su and Pan Ocean CEO Ahn Joong-ho, as well as Hong Geun-hyung, Smart Shipping and Logistics Team leader of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Korean Register CEO Lee Hyung-cheol, Kim Jin, project head of Korea Autonomous Surface Ship Project and Yoon Chang-jun, head of division of Hyundai Mipo Dockyard.

POS SM and Pan Ocean were selected as companies to support demonstration of MASS in November 2020. Accordingly, Pan Ocean will provide a 1,800 TEU class container ship (scheduled for delivery in the first half of 2024) to be built by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard as a demonstration vessel, and as being equipped with an autonomous navigation system, Pan Ocean will proceed maritime demonstration tests from the second half of 2024 to the end of 2025, according to the agreement.

MASS is a next-generation high-value-added vessel that can set optimal routes and navigate by convergence of all digital core technologies such as AI and IoT, big data, sensors, etc. The introduction of MASS is expected to reduce operating time and fuel costs, as well as improve cargo handling procedures through connection with smart ports and reduce accidents caused by human negligence.

Meanwhile, the Fleet Operation e-Center was also opened following the agreement ceremony for the designation of MASS. The e-Center enables real-time understanding of the ship's location, fuel consumption, and cargo loading status, and supporting for ship's efficiency and operational stability improvement such as pre-management of ship's risk factors and remote inspection. POS SM and Pan Ocean plan to actively respond to ship efficiency based on big data collected in real-time from the e-Center, as well as to demonstrate MASS through collaboration with the ‘Performance Demonstration Center’, which is scheduled to open this year.

Pan Ocean CEO Ahn Joong-ho expressed his aspirations and stated that “This demonstration project, which will be developed with our technology, will do our best for the successful progress of the project so as to increase the possibility of adoption as an international standard as well as the field application of technologies related to MASS as the initial purpose.”

In response, CEO Kim Myeong-su of POS SM stated that “In a situation where technology competition to become an international standard for MASS is intensifying worldwide, we will actively participate in the demonstration project for completion. Also, Fleet Operation e-Center will be able to provide optimal services to shipowners through big data based ship management by collecting and analyzing ship-to-land data in real time.”
